Trees are essential for people, wildlife and the environment.<\/span><\/p>

Trees absorb harmful carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, store it, and then release oxygen back into the air. As well as CO2, they also absorb smells and pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, ammonia and sulphur dioxide.<\/span><\/p>

When it rains, water run-off will find its way into streams, lakes and other wetlands, and when rainfall is heavy it can lead to floods. But by increasing the number of trees, leaf canopies help buffer the rainfall. Their roots also help to hold the soil in place, encouraging the water to seep down into the ground rather than flow over the ground.<\/span><\/p>

After the trees are planted, protecting them is vital. Patrols and guard towers watch for fires and keep the forests from getting cut down illegally or destroyed by natural disasters.<\/span><\/p>
